Setting Up a Flash Drive to Run Automatically

USB flash drives are a simple solution for easy backup and storage of important data. With a storage capacity that meets or exceeds the amount of data available on a DVD, USB drives are unique in that no other hardware is needed. Once plugged into a USB slot, the information on a flash drive is immediately available to the host computer. One of the nice features of CD-ROM and DVD drives is the ability to automatically run a disk when it's inserted into the drive. USB flash drives under Windows have similar functionality, but with a few limits where XP is concerned.

When a flash drive is inserted into a Windows XP driven computer, the operating system reads the files then offers the user options of how to continue (the same process as when a data CD is inserted in a drive). Depending on the type of files on the drive, the operating system displays options relevant to the file types. In other words, if you insert a flash drive containing mp3 files, Windows will offer the option of automatically playing the music in Windows Media Player or another media program that might be installed on the computer. There is a check box under these options that controls whether or not the operating system performs the same function anytime a drive is inserted with the same type of files. Checking this box will allow you to skip this step, so the next time you insert a drive with MP3's the program you chose will run automatically.

USB Cable Extension

Setting up a program to automatically run directly from a flash drive in Windows XP is a little more complicated. A third-party program will need to be installed that will give the user the option to run the program when the flash drive is inserted. The inability to auto run a program from a USB drive is a security feature in XP to prevent malevolent programs from compromising the operating system's integrity.

In contrast, Windows Vista does allow this feature. A program on the root directory of the flash drive is run by creating a text file (with a text editing program like Notepad) named autorun.inf. The autorun.inf file should include the line "[autorun] open=XXX.exe" (without the quotes) where XXX is the name of the program you want to run. Save this file to the flash drive, making sure the extension is 'inf', not 'txt'. Once the drive is inserted again, choose 'Always Do This For Software and Games', then 'Run This Program'. Whenever the drive is inserted again, the program will run automatically.

Some computers are also capable of booting directly from the flash drive by changing CMOS options. With the proper CMOS settings, the computer will first attempt to boot from a flash drive inserted in a USB port. If bootable files are not located on the flash drive, the operating system will automatically boot from your hard drive as normal. A handy feature should your computer crash and modifications to your unbootable operating system need to be performed.

Flash drives are able to do everything CD-ROMs and DVDs can do, usually with greater ease. The fact that new computers all have USB ports, but vary in DVD or CD-ROM availability, is an argument for the USB drive's indispensability over any other storage medium.

How to Improve Your Broadband Connection

Broadband is becoming a common thing these days. We need broadband for internet connection. Therefore, we should know how we can speed things up through some easy ways so that we can make full use of the internet connection.

First of all, you need to know the maximum speed for your internet connection. Then you need to check whether you are getting the speed similar to what you are supposed to get. You will need to run a broadband speed test to get the result.

USB Cable Extension

internal usb cable extension

Avoid using telephone extension cables as the cables often cause interference of speed. You should connect the router directly to the phone socket. Then you can use an Ethernet cable to connect the router to your computer. However, if you still need to use extension, make sure you choose one that is of high quality.

When you are surfing the internet, make sure there isn't many applications running behind the scene. Switch off whatever unnecessary applications such as music player or video player. This will help to increase the speed of the internet connection.

Anti Virus plays an important role for computer and you need to make sure you get the latest updates to protect your computer from any spyware and AdWare. These can cause interruption to your internet connection as well.

Most people are using wireless router and in this case, you need to make sure it is password protected to prevent anyone else from using free internet connection. If there is limitation on your broadband connection, sharing your internet will drain the data transfer and you will lose out faster than you think.

Try to avoid downloading too many files at a time. Downloading too many files will also drain your broadband data transfer fast and slow down your internet connection. The truth is most ISP will control your download rate as well to make sure you do not go beyond the data allowance given to you.

Sometimes router can be a problem as well. Choose a router or a modem that is high quality. Paying more won't hurt you in the long run. I am sure you know that by using cheap router or modem will decrease the performance of your internet connection as well.

If mobile broadband is too slow for you, maybe you just need to switch to land line broadband. Not everyone can use mobile broadband effectively so choose the one that is most suitable for your home use. If you have done everything else and yet nothing seems to improve, you might need to talk to your ISP to check if there is any other way you can increase the speed.

Die Zugabe von einem externen Monitor an Ihren Laptop

Most people love owning a laptop computer for its unbeatable portability and convenience. Many people are even switching to netbooks which are even smaller and more compact than your traditional laptop. They are all perfect for working from the neighborhood coffee shop or even on an airline tray table. The place where they can actually be the least convenient is your home! When working at home on your desk, this is the time when you begin to notice how cramped the keyboard is and how small the screen in. You may be tempted to get a second computer for your home that has a larger monitor that is easier to see.

Many laptop users solve this problem by buying an external monitor and hooking it up to their computer when they are at home. This way, they get all the benefits of a portable computer while on the the road, and the comfort and size of a normal monitor when working at home. Often the desktop monitor will mirror the display of your laptop. In other cases, you can actually configure the second screen to act as an extension to your desktop screen so that you will have more than twice as much room to work! Almost all laptops have a port to connect up a monitor. Depending on the brand and size of your laptop, it may require a converter to connect up with an external monitor but these are not too expensive. Anyone who tries an additional monitor with their laptop never wants to go back!

Presentation Checklist: Essential Items for a Presenter's Carry-On Bag

One of the keys to a successful presentation is to be prepared. This includes not only improving your expertise with your content and presentation skills but also anticipating what can and will go wrong. Whether you tote a briefcase, backpack, laptop bag or other carry-on luggage, packing a well-stocked presentation bag may be the answer to any number of problems which can happen before and during your presentations. Whether you are speaking across the globe or down the street, create a checklist of essential items which may include the following. (Note:This list assumes a projector, projector screen, and microphone are provided although some presenters are responsible for these as well).

Laptop. Dedicated laptop power supply which stays in your bag. Leave the factory version at your desk. Every time I buy a new computer, I also buy an extra adapter but you can find a number of universal power supplies at your local office or computer supply store. Extra battery for laptop. Your own presentation remote control. Extra AA and triple A batteries for remote, headphones, and other equipment plus 2 spare 12V batteries for the wireless microphones in a meeting room. Although these are often supplied by a hotel or AV staff, when these go dead, it always seems to be in the middle of a presentation. Mouse and mouse pad. Three-prong extension cord or power strip. Duct tape to tape down cords; small rolls are available from most travel catalogs/sites. Security cable for laptop; although these can be cut, it creates a deterrent to a swift thief. Portable timer or clock with a readable display to monitor presentation time. 4 GB or larger flash/USB drive to backup your presentation or to transfer it to another laptop if you have equipment failure. Backup copy of your PowerPoint (or other) presentation on CD-ROM or USB flash drive. Hard copies of your PowerPoint (or other) presentation slide show and presentation handout. Presentation notes. MP3 player loaded with royalty-free music you can play during walk-in and breaks in your program, plus your personal playlists of music, movies, and TV shows. Cell phone, digital camera, and chargers for all mobile devices. Stereo 1/8" (mini) phone to 2 mono 1/4" phone send return cable so you can plug your MP3 player directly into the sound system. Noise canceling headphones to help buffer noisy plane flights. A spare pair of earbuds. Copy of AV room setup. Copy of your presentation introduction printed in a large font. Monitor extension cord. Network cable and wireless card for Internet access at hotel. Personalized labels on laptop and all accessories. Cough drops or throat drops; avoid cherry flavored which will give you an odd red mouth. I also pack a throat control spray to smooth out those throat tickles. Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets, Imodium AD, and other first aid remedies to help you recover from a long flight or strange food. Eye mask for airplane naps. Also handy for ending unwanted conversations with annoying seatmates. Color copies of your passport and drivers license. A new, crisp 0 bill hidden in a zippered pocket of your carry-on bag. This can bail you out of a lot of trouble almost anywhere in the world. A collection of smaller bills for tipping hotel setup staff and other helpful personnel.

USB Cable Extension

All this, and more, should fit neatly in your carry-on bag. Not only have these essentials saved me multiple times, but I have also rescued several of my fellow presenters as well.

Installing the Dension Gateway Lite iPod Car Kit

Once you've decided to purchase an iPod car kit, inevitably you've chosen the Gateway Lite produced by Dension. You only have one further obstacle to hurdle, the installation. There are two options available to you for installing the kit. The first option, Pay a professional engineer to install the kit, either travelling to them or they can travel to you. The second option, is to install the iPod car kit yourself. Which is by far the more cost effective option and probably most convenient too. See below an installation guide to judge whether your capable of the installation, should you choose to go ahead.

The installation of the Gateway lite is fairly simple and pain free. Although this is a generic installation guide, it will suit 99% of vehicles.

USB Cable Extension

mini usb cable extension

Before you begin the installation, please remove the keys from the ignition and check that any radio codes are recorded for future reference.

Step one is to remove your car stereo, this will usually involve radio removal tools which will vary depending on what vehicle you have. Radio removal keys are readily available and the majority of online shops or traditional vehicle based retail outlets stock them. Radio removal tools are extremely convenient and can save you a lot of time and energy. This should take between 1-5 minutes

Step two is to remove the harnesses from the back of the stereo, Most vehicles have a Quadlock connection, this is a fairly large connection block that houses the wires to and from the stereo. If the Harness is a Quadlock connection the Dension harness will usually replicate the original harness exactly. The Dension Lite harness simply fits into the vehicle harness and then back to the stereo, basically a link between the vehicle and the stereo.

If the vehicle doesn't have a Quadlock connection, the gateway lite harness fits into the CD changer port on the the back of the stereo. Usually located in the top right of the stereo as your looking at the back of it. Most of the time the harness simply connects straight into place, however occasionally the harness may have to be connected into the original harness then re-connected. This stage should take 2 minutes.

Step three is to connect the Gateway Lite PCB (the little black box) to the Dension harness, its the most straight forward step of the installation. This will take 30 seconds.

Step Four is to connect the iPod dock and USB extension cable to the PCB, again very straight forward. Once this stage is done its usually a good idea to turn ignition on to check the system works. (Follow the user manual to perform the operations for iPod/USB track selection) Again this will take 1-2 minutes.

Step five, Route the cables through into position within the vehicle, this is usually the most time consuming part of the installation. Depending on the vehicle this can be a complex job and may require the removal of some of the fascia / Dashboard. This part of the installation may take up to 30 minutes depending on difficulty, especially if you want a professionally installed look.

Step Six, replace the stereo into its fittings. Read the operational instructions from Dension and enjoy the use of your iPod and all of your music while you're driving.
